UNO String Faculty Visits MSHS
Maestro Barry Ford guest conducts the Millard South Symphony Orchestra in rehearsal during first block. Students enjoyed a performance by Dr. Mary Perkinson, Greg Clinton, and Dani Meier while also receiving tips and feedback from these excellent musicians.

 Omaha Symphony Visits MSHS

The Millard South Symphony Orchestra worked side-by-side with the Omaha Symphony under the direction of renowned maestro David Barg today.  The professionals shared technical tips and wisdom from their collective 900 years of professional experience with our very own MSHS orchestra students.  It was a moving and memorable experience.
2013 Nebraska All State Orchestra
 Congratulations to the students who were selected and participated in the Nebraska All-State Orchestra. Adrienne Stratton won Assistant Principal Chair of the Second Violin section. Zoe Wilhelm was Associate First Oboe, Spencer Reynolds East was Associate Fourth Horn, Rachel Ballard was Principal Second Horn, and David Baker soloed as Principal First Horn in the orchestra. The orchestra performed Triumphal March from Verdi's Aida, as well as the third and fourth movements of Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony.

Philharmonic Orchestra Contest

Millard South Philharmonic Orchestra performed at the Nebraska American String Teachers Association's Young Orchestra Festival on Saturday morning in Lincoln.  The Freshmen musicians represented Millard South with grace and professionalism.  They were awarded a Division I rating of "Highly Superior" for their performance.  Students who received a Division II "Superior" rating for their solo performance were Jeremy Boyd (bass), Jonathan Cottone (violin), Ashlyn Hoy (violin), Lainey Paquette (violin), and Diego Trejo (violin).  Students who received a Division I "Highly Superior" rating for their solo performance were Natalie Bielenberg (violin), Brock McCullough (viola), Sophia Nguyen (violin), Kathleen Shriver (viola-perfect score), Kira Williamson (cello), Edward Yuan (violin-perfect score), and Wenxian Zhou (violin).
District Music Contest
Millard South Orchestra

Millard South Symphony Orchestra performed at District Music Contest on Wednesday and received a Superior (I*) Rating, which is the highest rating possible, from all three judges.  On Saturday, Millard South Chamber Orchestra received a Superior (I) Rating for their performance, Stomp Strings received a Superior (I) Rating for their performance, String Quartet received a Superior (I) Rating for their performance, and Alec Ford and Jessica Tapp received a Superior (I) Rating for their duet performance.  Students who received an Excellent (II) Rating for their solo performance were Emily Becker, Matthew Clarke, Beth Gunzelman, Eric Hossner, Katie Hunke, and Kimberly Sharp.  Students who received a Superior (I) Rating for their solo performance were Adrienne Stratton, Melanie Sigel (perfect score), and Rachel Weber (perfect score).

Orchestra takes GRAND CHAMPION at Winter Park Ski Music Festival
Winter Park Ski Music Festival

Millard South String Orchestra competed in national competition at the Winter Park Ski Music Festival in Colorado this weekend with thousands of students from bands, choirs, and orchestras from several different states.  Millard South String Orchestra received a "Superior" rating for their performance.  They also won "Best in Class" for division 4A.  Out of all of the orchestras in all divisions, Millard South String Orchestra won "Grand Champion" (1st place).

Millard South Symphony Orchestra spent a morning at the Holland Performing Arts Center in a side-by-side workshop with the Omaha Symphony.  The professionals sat in with the students, sharing tips and strategies toward advancing musicianship.  The event was facilitated by renowned conductor David Barg.
BOCH Festival

Congratulations to the Millard South students who participated in the UNO Band Orchestra Choir Honors Festival.  Kassie Bielenberg, Serena Johnson, and Brock McCullough participated in the Honor Choir.  Brian Nelson, David Baker, Dan Shriver, Lauren Milbourn, and Lily Dodge participated in the Honor Band.  Kimberly Sharp, Alec Ford, Adrienne Stratton, Samantha Stock, and Melanie Sigel participated in the Honor Orchestra.  Kimberly Sharp won the Violin I Assistant Concert Master chair, Alec Ford won Violin II Principal chair, Samantha Stock won Viola Principal chair, and Melanie Sigel won Bass Principal chair.  All of these students rehearsed with select high school musicians from across the state under renowned guest conductors, culminating in a performance at the Holland Performing Arts Center.

Millard South hosted Anderson Middle School and Central Middle School students in concert on Tuesday, October 23.  The orchestras dressed as their favorite super heroes and performed music from the movies.

The UNO Student String Quartet and String Faculty came to Millard South on Friday October 12, and sat side by side with our Millard South Symphony Orchestra in a rehearsal lead by Maestro Barry Ford.
Symphony Orchestra Outreach
Patriots Orchestra

The Millard South Symphony Orchestra has been doing some Orchestra Outreach events at some elementary schools during the past weeks. On May 14, we visited Neihardt Elementary where the Millard South Symphony Orchestra performed for the 3rd grade students and then worked individually with the 3rd graders to share their knowledge and expertise about learning and playing their instrument.
We are also pleased to announce the Orchestra results from the District Music Contest in April:

The Symphony Orchestra (all strings 10th-12th grade) received a Division I Superior Rating.
Chamber Orchestra received a Division I Superior Rating.
Stomp Strings received a Division I Superior Rating.

The Omaha Symphony visited Millard South yesterday (Feb.15) to workshop with the Millard South Symphony Orchestra.  The professionals sat in with the students, sharing tips and strategies toward advancing musicianship.  The event was facilitated by nationally renowned guest conductor David Barg, of New York.
Wesleyan Honor Music Festival

Congratulations to the students who represented Millard South at the Wesleyan Honor Music Weekend February 9-11.  From Millard South High school, two students participated in the Honor Band, two students in the Honor Choir, and ten students in the Honor Orchestra.  Participants were selected based on auditions that were sent in from schools all over Nebraska.  The students rehearsed with some of the best conductors in the nation, and performed on Saturday at Nebraska Wesleyan University.  During the festival, the guest conductors were asked to choose 6 students from the entire festival who were deserving of the "Outstanding Musician Award", one of which was awarded to Melanie Sigel.
UNO Band Orchestra Choir Honors Festival

Millard South had 34 students who were invited (based on audition) to participate in the UNO Band Orchestra Choir Honors (BOCH) Festival this weekend. 17 string orchestra students, 10 band students, and 7 choir students represented Millard South as they rehearsed with students from all around Nebraska on Friday and Saturday.  Their work culminated in a performance at the Holland Performing Arts Center on Sunday.
All-Millard Orchestra Festival

On Monday, January 23, Millard South hosted the All-Millard Orchestra Festival. There were 500 orchestra students that attended the event. The 10-12th grades rehearsed with guest conductor Brandon Keith Brown in the morning, and the 8th-9th grades rehearsed in the afternoon.  The concert was at 7:00pm, and concluded with a mass Festival Orchestra selection with all 500 students playing together.
